Beu

Ooststellingwerf, 26 lokaties / locations 1999

This 10 meter inflatable sculpture is based on the characteristic language and authentic oral history of a region in the south of the province of Friesland called Ooststellingwerf. With the inflatable sculpture ‘Beu’ the bogeyman figuring in the local popular tales is brought to life. During a month this ‘Beu’ or bogeyman travelled along the villages and emerged at unexpected places in a landscape of peat moor and cornfields. ‘Beu’ inflated itself and collapsed while making teddy bear noises using the ‘eu’ and ‘oa’-sounds characteristic for the Stellingwerf language. In this region where the inhabitants have always imperturbably managed to maintain their own culture, the grabbing and grumbling monster as a trouble-stirrer is the personification of everything that is unknown and incomprehensible. Beu is the symbol of fear and anguish, but also of consolation and humour when he stands as a trophy on the village square. It is true that he did get a distinct shape, but not a face though: that task was reserved for the inhabitants of the thirteen villages who could have their photograph taken with Beu during the art project. In this way, an exceptional portrait of the municipality of Ooststellingwerf arose.
